8 Week Masterclass – Creating Characters with the Mask
This 8-week masterclass is an opportunity to enrich your physical characterisation techniques and transform into characters outside of your typical range.
The classes begin with ensemble movement training that prepares your intuitive and sensory body for working with mask and character practices. The training concentrates on developing your physical self-knowledge, heightening your sensitivity and awareness to your whole body in space, and grounding you in presence.
We then move on to expressive movement training and creating characters with the mask. Through solo and group improvisations you will learn to physically embody the unique inner world of a character and make it visible for an audience. You will discover how to embody an action with truth, clarity and presence, and through paired improvisations you will develop relationships and scenarios with other masks.
When creating or performing characters, the expressive mask helps you to move away from being yourself physically, or from being physically stiff, or illustrating through gestures or actions. The mask heals the division between the body and the will and provides an opportunity for you to break through your ‘known’ physical boundaries. It allows you to plumb deep into your resources, tap your soul, imagination, and life experiences, to embody an expressive and emotional authenticity that becomes a permanent point of reference for your future work.
There is great freedom and beauty in this work, it opens many doors of creative possibility and physical versatility.
The foundation of the training is based on the philosophies and practice of past and present masters in the actor’s craft, namely Etienne Decroux, Jacques Lecoq, Ariane Mnouchkine, Jerzy Grotowski, David Latham and Jenny Kemp.
